Privilege of Courage.

I'm currently watching a local series that was set in school life in the late 80's. I kept thinking about something one of the characters said in this series. His friend asked him why he accepts all the abuse without trying to fight back.



He said that he is not like his friend. He can't fight back. He can't risk going against someone for the sake of his mother's safety. He can't run away like his friend.



I'm thinking right now whether this is caused by a lack of courage or simply the right to choose that got stripped away from his life. Both the "abuser" and friend are someone from a privileged background, while he is simply poor. With this fact, he is already sitting at the bottom of the pyramid in this so-called fair system.



He wasn't scared. He didn't lack courage. He was a child who cared about his mother's well-being back home. He was a child who had nowhere to return. He was a child with no backup or support due to his poor background. In the end, being couragous was a privilege with big price that he couldn't afford to pay. That reasons enough for him to endure the abuse throughout his childhood.



We might live in much better environments these days. Although the caste system was abolished years ago, the remnants of it are still lingering around in our society. Being the courageous ones is something someone will tell you to do, but once you do, it will be the same people who moan about how loud you're. Punishment awaits. You'll be cast out. You'll be labelled as hard to handle. The voice that can be heard only from someone who has a background to back them up. The ones who have the right to exist have to be courageous, but the privilege of courage is not something everyone can pay for. シ
